A Warm Atmosphere

And now for something completely different: A script idea I wrote after a philosophical dilemma I encountered not so different from that described herein. The style is unashamedly Sorkinese-American, aka The West Wing. Nothing new here, but a bit of fun. May this Yuletide be full of warm atmospheres for you. Merry Christmas.

INT. OFFICE - HALLWAY - DAYTIME
Peter is just rounding up a conversation on his mobile,
starting to walk down the hallway. Carrie joins him from the first
 set of desks.

PETER
Alright I’ll see you tonight Mom. Love you too. (Hangs up.) Hey.

CARRIE
Hey. How is she?

PETER
Better. I’m taking her out tonight.

CARRIE
Aww that’s sweet. Where?

PETER
The Old Duke.

CARRIE
What’s it like?

PETER
I told her it has a “warm atmosphere”.

CARRIE
Sounds nice.

PETER
Well, it will be, if it does.

They round a corner.

CARRIE
You’ve never been?

PETER
Bobby just recommended it to me. Said they do great all-
American cuisine.

CARRIE
And it has a warm atmosphere?

PETER
I can’t be sure.

CARRIE
Darn.

PETER
Do you think I should call and check?

CARRIE
I think maybe you should.

PETER
Yeah.

CARRIE
They might be one of these cold-shoulder type places.

PETER
I can’t help but wonder.

CARRIE
Perhaps they can arrange a special something just for you.

PETER
A bit of firewood.

CARRIE
Jazz trio.

PETER
A few low-lit lamps.

CARRIE
Your Mom will be impressed.

PETER
Do you think you can quantifiably define “warm atmosphere”?

CARRIE
She’ll say, “Peter, you were right about one thing: this place
has a really warm atmosphere.”

OLIVER enters from a side room carrying a pile of briefs.

OLIVER
What does?

CARRIE
The Old Duke.

OLIVER
Really?

PETER
You’ve heard otherwise?

OLIVER
No. I was just wondering how you define a “warm atmosphere”?

PETER
Exactly.

CARRIE
Surely most restaurants would fulfill the criterion of having
a “warm atmosphere”.

OLIVER
I’ll say.

CARRIE
Take her there, find out, if she says it was all cold and icy,
get your money back.

PETER
You’re right.

VICTOR (OS)
(Yelling) Where's that piece on the new appointment?!

OLIVER
(From the side of his mouth to Peter and Carrie) Too bad you
can’t get it back here.

I’ve been carrying a script around in my head for the longest time, but it never seems to materialize. I’ve gone on line to learn how to correctly format a screenplay. In many ways, once you get the formatting down, it’s easier than writing fiction, because a script, unlike a short story or novel, is not the final product. It’s just one piece in a collaborative effort. It doesn’t have to be as perfect. I’ve been giving some thought to doing it in installments using WordPress, trying to get feedback along the way. I like what you’ve done. Do you have any thoughts?
